Every product needs its own niche, and Mozilla seemingly has chosen the one occupied by the 800 lb gorilla of browsers. The introduction of Quantum resulted in a slight uptick in Firefox usage, but it quickly resumed its decline. So now Firefox has less market share than when they introduced Quantum, according to the results I last saw. They’re trying to attract users not by differentiating themselves from the market leader, but by removing differentiating features. They think that by becoming Chrome, they will siphon off some Chrome users… but why would Chrome users who want Chrome’s look and feel and feature set look elsewhere? If what they want is Chrome, they’ve already got the Chromiest browser in existence. Now they’ve alienated those users while going after the “mainstream” crowd, which Chrome has sewn up. They’ve lost the people who don’t want to think about computing stuff to Chrome, but they used to have the power users, since theirs was the only choice that allowed such customization. Mozilla finds themselves in a hole, yet they keep digging. I just made a post on the Techdows page cited above (I believe it needs to be moderated). They’re both about giving users a choice that Firefox proper no longer does, and this is just one more example of why alternative Firefox-based browsers exist. I am 99% sure that they won’t, not having talked to the devs of either of them. I would be shocked if either Pale Moon or Waterfox follows Firefox on this issue. The only extension I use now is NoScript and it is set to auto-update, currently at 10.1.9.6. There used to be an extension that let me do this selectively but after Firefox version 57 it was never updated to the new extension technology. I have been doing this for a year now with out any problems. Just did it again after the 62.0.2 update, these are the files moved: Every time Firefox auto-updates I have a knee-jerk reaction and move everything from under “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\features” to a directory I created called “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\removed features”.
